AUTHOR AGAINST AIDS
Brooklyn native Caroline McGill founded Synergy Publications in 2003. She obtained a degree in Business Administration at Bladen Community College in North Carolina, and then later penned her first full length novel, A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent, a semi-autobiography. She hopes that women and men alike will read this novel and begin to take initiative in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent was the inspiration behind the S.O.S (Saving Our Selves) AIDS Awareness Campaign. S.O.S (Saving Our Selves) is a campaign fueled on educating the minority community on fighting the AIDS epidemic.
A passage from the book reads: “Portia kept up with the news and she knew that all across the world, young black women were dying from AIDS faster than any other demographic. Afraid of becoming a statistic, she went ahead and did it. In the past eight months, she and Jay got tested twice, and each yielded a negative result, thank God!”
A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent is provocative, uncensored, and brimming with complex emotions. In chapter 22, McGill writes, “Portia’s soul was wounded and her heart ached. Tears rolled down her face for her dear friend, whom fate had driven to such an untimely death.”
“I understand how the topic of AIDS can be so scary to young people but it is our reality and we must not turn a deaf ear to this epidemic”, says McGill. |
